The well-specific costs quotes leave out
Most softener pricing is written for houses on municipal water. On a well there are three costs that routinely appear after the fact, and they are worth knowing before you compare quotes.
- Iron removal. Above about 3 mg/L of iron you need an iron filter ahead of the softener — $1,200 to $3,000 on top. A quote for a softener alone on iron-bearing water is quoting a system that will foul.
- An acid neutraliser. If pH is below 6.5, that comes first at $600 to $1,800, and it raises hardness as it works — so the softener has to be sized after it, not before.
- A sediment pre-filter. $60 to $400, and effectively mandatory on a well. Cheap, and it is what keeps the expensive parts alive.
This is why the honest answer to “what does a softener cost” on a well is often “that depends what else your water needs first”.
Size changes the price less than you'd think
A 48,000 grain unit is not twice the price of a 24,000 grain unit — the control valve, the tanks and the labour are largely the same, and only the resin volume differs. The step up is often $200 to $400.
That matters because undersizing costs more over time than the upgrade would have. A small unit regenerates more often, and every regeneration has a fixed overhead of salt and water regardless of how much hardness it actually cleared. Buying one size up is frequently the cheaper decision across the life of the unit.
Can you install it yourself?
Plumbing a softener is within reach of a competent DIYer where there is already a suitable spot: a main line you can cut into, a drain within reach, and a power outlet. That saves the $200 to $700 installation charge.
Three things push it toward a professional. Rerouting plumbing or adding a drain line is a bigger job than it looks. Some local codes require an air gap on the drain and a permit for the connection. And some manufacturers void the warranty on units not installed by an authorised dealer, which is worth checking before deciding — the saving is smaller than the warranty on a $1,200 unit.
Is a softener worth the money?
For genuinely hard water, the arithmetic is reasonable. Scale shortens the life of water heaters and appliances, and there is a real, if modest, efficiency loss as it builds up on heating elements.
