The correct order for well water treatment
The short answer
Well water treatment goes in this order: sediment filter, acid neutraliser, iron filter, water softener, carbon filter, UV, and reverse osmosis at one tap. Each stage protects or enables the next. Installed out of sequence, correctly chosen equipment can fail to work at all.
The order
Not every house needs every stage — most need two or three. But whichever ones you do need, they go in this relative order, and skipping the reasoning is how people end up with equipment that disappoints them.
- Sediment filter — first, protecting everything after it from grit and particles.
- Acid neutraliser — if pH is below about 6.5. Must precede any oxidising stage.
- Iron / manganese / sulfur filter — oxidises and removes metals and sulfide.
- Water softener — removes hardness, after the iron that would foul it is gone.
- Carbon filter — polishes taste and odour, and strips any chlorine used upstream.
- UV disinfection — last whole-house stage, on water that is now clear.
- Reverse osmosis — point of use, under one sink, for nitrate and arsenic.
Why each position is what it is
Every one of these positions exists because of a specific failure that happens otherwise. Taken one at a time:
- Sediment first, because every stage downstream is more expensive and more easily damaged. A cartridge costs a few dollars; a fouled softener resin bed does not.
- Neutraliser before the iron filter, because oxidation is strongly pH-dependent. Below pH 7 iron barely oxidises and manganese needs above 8. An iron filter in acidic water is not undersized — the chemistry it relies on simply is not happening.
- Iron before the softener, because iron fouls ion exchange resin faster than regeneration can strip it. Capacity falls, the bed eventually needs chemical cleaning, and most manufacturers exclude iron above their stated limit from the warranty.
- Carbon after the softener, so it is not loaded with hardness and iron it was never meant to handle. Carbon is finite adsorption capacity — spending it on the wrong contaminant wastes it.
- UV last, because suspended particles physically shield organisms from the lamp. UV on unfiltered water is a disinfection system that reports success while passing live bacteria.
- RO at one tap, because it is slow, sends several gallons to drain for each one produced, and there is no reason to demineralise water you are going to flush a toilet with.
The four mistakes this prevents
In practice the same handful of errors recur, and each is expensive in its own way.
- Buying a softener for a sulfur smell. Ion exchange has no mechanism for removing a dissolved gas. The smell remains and the money is spent.
- Fitting an iron filter into acidic water. It underperforms immediately, gets blamed, and is often replaced with a larger one that has the same problem.
- Fitting UV without adequate sediment filtration. The most dangerous of the four, because it produces false confidence rather than an obvious failure.
- Sizing a softener before an acid neutraliser goes in. Calcite adds hardness as it works, so the softener is sized against a number that is about to change.
Where the order flexes
Two genuine variations are worth knowing, so this does not read as more rigid than it is.
Where continuous chlorination is used for heavy sulfur or iron bacteria, the injection point goes ahead of a retention tank and the filter, and a carbon stage after it removes the chlorine residual. Chlorination effectively takes the iron filter's oxidising role, but a filter is still needed to remove what has been oxidised.
And where a second sediment filter follows an oxidising stage, that is not redundancy. The iron filter's job is to turn dissolved iron into particles; something has to catch the ones that get through.
