Cloudy or milky well water
The short answer
Pour a glass and watch it. If the cloudiness clears from the bottom upward within a minute or two, it is dissolved air — harmless, but it usually means your pump is drawing air, which is worth investigating. If it stays cloudy or settles sediment at the bottom, it is suspended solids, and that needs filtration.
What actually causes it
Several different problems produce this same symptom, and they need completely different fixes. Work down the list — each one names the check that rules it in or out.

Dissolved air
Tiny air bubbles suspended in the water, released as it depressurises at the tap. Completely harmless in itself, but air in the water means air is getting into the system somewhere, and that has causes worth finding.
How to tell
The glass clears from the bottom up over 30 to 120 seconds, like a pint of beer settling. The cleared water is perfectly clear. - 2
A waterlogged or failing pressure tank
When the bladder in a pressure tank fails, air and water mix directly. It is one of the most common sources of air in the water, and it comes with a distinctive symptom.
How to tell
Cloudy water plus a pump that switches on and off rapidly — short-cycling. Tapping the tank sounds full all the way up rather than hollow at the top. - 3
The pump drawing air
A dropping water table, a pump set too shallow, or a leak on the suction side letting the pump pull air along with water. Common in dry spells and in older shallow-well setups.
How to tell
Cloudiness that is worse during dry weather or after heavy use, sometimes with spitting taps and fluctuating pressure. - 4
Suspended sediment
Silt, clay or fine sand from the aquifer, a deteriorating well screen, or a new well that has not yet settled. Also produced when iron or manganese oxidises into fine particles.
How to tell
The glass does not clear, or it clears by dropping visible material to the bottom. A paper coffee filter catches something.
The glass test
This is the whole diagnosis and it costs nothing. Fill a clear glass from a cold tap and set it on the counter without moving it.
Air clears from the bottom upward, because the bubbles rise. Within a minute or two you are left with clear water and nothing in the bottom of the glass. Sediment does the opposite — it either stays uniformly cloudy or it falls to the bottom, leaving clear water on top and material underneath.
That single observation splits the four causes into two pairs and tells you whether you are looking at a pump and pressure tank question or a filtration question.
If it's air
Cloudy water from air is not a water quality problem and there is nothing to treat. It is, however, a symptom, and the underlying causes range from trivial to expensive.
The most common is a failed pressure tank bladder, which is also the most consequential, because a waterlogged tank makes the pump short-cycle and short-cycling is what destroys pumps. If your water went cloudy around the same time the pump started clicking on and off frequently, deal with the tank promptly rather than waiting.
Less commonly, air enters because the pump is drawing it — a falling water table, a pump set too close to the water level, or a leak on the suction line. This one tends to be seasonal and worse in dry spells, and it is a job for a well contractor rather than a treatment dealer.
If it's sediment
Sediment is filtered out, and the practical question is what size and what type. A spin-down separator handles coarse sand and grit and can be flushed rather than replaced, which makes it cheap to run where there is a lot of material. Cartridge filters handle finer material and are rated in microns — 20 or 30 micron for general duty, 5 micron or below for fine silt.
Do not jump straight to the finest filter available. An over-fine filter on water carrying a lot of sediment clogs constantly, drops your pressure, and gets replaced so often that people give up on it. Start coarse, and step finer only if the water is still cloudy.
If the sediment appeared suddenly in a well that was previously clear, that is worth investigating rather than filtering. A failing well screen, a collapsing borehole or surface water finding a way in are all possibilities, and all of them are better fixed than filtered.
Why cloudiness matters if you have UV
There is one context where cloudy water stops being cosmetic and becomes a safety issue: UV disinfection.
A UV lamp kills organisms by exposing them to light. Suspended particles physically shield bacteria from that light, so water that looks slightly cloudy can pass through a UV system and come out still carrying live organisms — while the system reports itself as working perfectly.
This is precisely why sediment filtration belongs upstream of UV, and why UV belongs last in the treatment train. If you have UV fitted and your water has become cloudy, treat that as urgent rather than aesthetic.
