Sand and sediment in well water
The short answer
Sand and grit in well water almost always means something has changed in the well itself — a failing screen, a pump set too low, or a dropping water table. A sediment filter will catch it, but filtering without finding the source lets the underlying problem carry on damaging your pump.

Several different problems produce this same symptom, and they need completely different fixes. Work down the list — each one names the check that rules it in or out.

A failing or undersized well screen
The screen keeps aquifer material out of the well. When it corrodes, cracks or was specified too coarse for the formation, sand comes through with the water. Common in older wells and in fine sandy aquifers.

The material is flaky and rust-coloured rather than granular and sharp. A sample taken at an outside spigot near the wellhead is clean while the kitchen tap is not.
Why finding the source matters more than filtering
A sediment filter is cheap and it will give you clear water at the tap. That makes it a tempting place to stop, and for a mild case it is a reasonable answer.
The problem is what the sand is doing on the way there. Abrasive material passing through a pump wears the impellers, and a pump moving sand fails years earlier than one moving clean water. It also accumulates in the pressure tank and the water heater, reducing capacity and eventually needing both flushed or replaced.
So the filter protects your plumbing and your appliances, but not the most expensive component in the system — which sits upstream of it. That is the argument for finding out why the sand is there.
Narrowing down where it's coming from
Two simple observations separate most of the causes, and both cost nothing.
- Sample at an outside spigot as close to the pressure tank as possible, upstream of any treatment. Clean here but dirty indoors means the material is from your plumbing, not the well.
- Run a tap and watch the first thirty seconds against the next few minutes. A burst at pump start that then clears points at the pump sitting in settled sediment.
- Note whether it varies with the seasons. Worse in dry weather points at the water table.
- Look at the material itself. Sharp, granular, pale grains are aquifer sand. Flaky and rust-coloured is corrosion from steel pipe or a tank.
- If it is aquifer sand and constant, that is a well problem — a contractor with a downhole camera is the next call.
Filtering it properly in the meantime
Whatever the cause, you want the sand out of the house while you deal with it. The mistake here is reaching straight for a fine cartridge filter, which will clog within days on a well producing real quantities of sand and leave you changing cartridges constantly.
For coarse sand, a spin-down separator is the right first stage — a mesh screen in a clear housing that you flush out rather than replace. It handles a lot of material for almost no running cost, and the clear housing lets you see how much is arriving, which is useful diagnostic information in itself.
