The short answer
Most whole-house well treatment trains cost $250 to $700 a year to run, and no two years are the same. A softener and sediment filter alone might be $150; add UV and you are paying for a lamp every twelve months plus about 350 kWh of electricity, because the lamp never switches off. The years that hurt are the ones where a media bed falls due — a carbon bed every four years, iron filter media every seven — which can double a year’s cost on their own.

Why the quote you were given is only half the number
Every cost guide and dealer quote for well water treatment answers the same question: what does it cost to buy and put in. That is the number you pay once. The number you pay every year afterwards is rarely written down anywhere, and on a ten-year view it is frequently larger.
A $3,000 system that costs $600 a year to run has cost $9,000 by year ten. A $4,500 system that costs $250 a year has cost $7,000. The cheaper system to buy is often the more expensive one to own, and nothing in the purchase conversation surfaces that.
The lines that get left out
Four costs account for almost all the difference between what people expect to pay and what they actually pay.
- The UV lamp is a calendar item, not a failure item. It is replaced every twelve months whether or not it still glows. A UV lamp’s output falls to roughly 60% of new by around 9,000 hours, and a lamp running below the dose needed to inactivate bacteria looks exactly like a working one. This is the only line here where skipping it is a health question rather than a budget one.
- UV draws power every hour of the year. A typical residential unit pulls about 40 watts continuously, which is roughly 350 kWh a year. At common rates that costs more annually than the replacement lamp does, and it is almost never mentioned.
- Calcite is consumed, not replaced. An acid neutraliser works by dissolving its media into the water — that is the mechanism. So calcite needs topping up roughly every year. Most cost guides list it as a five-year media change, which understates it substantially.
- Media beds come due in a lump. Carbon is spent in about four years, iron filter media in about seven, softener resin in ten to fifteen. Nothing warns you: the water simply gets gradually worse until someone tests it. Budget from the average year, not the quiet one.
Where the running cost is actually reducible
Some of these costs are fixed by physics. Several are not, and the difference is worth knowing before you buy.
- Size the softener up, not down. A larger softener regenerates less often, and each regeneration has a fixed salt and water overhead regardless of how much hardness it cleared. Undersizing to save $300 on the purchase can cost more than that in salt over the life of the unit.
- Protect the expensive stages with the cheap one. A $14 sediment cartridge changed on time is what keeps a $450 iron filter bed and a $110 UV lamp doing their jobs. Sediment reaching a UV lamp shields organisms from it outright, and iron reaching softener resin fouls it years early.
- Get the treatment order right. Stages installed out of order destroy each other. Iron ahead of a softener fouls the resin and voids most warranties; UV ahead of filtration is close to useless. Reordering after the fact is a plumbing bill on top of a replacement bill.
- Do your own cartridge changes. A service contract at $150 to $300 a year is frequently the largest single line in the table above, and much of what it covers is unscrewing a housing.
