Pink slime in the toilet, shower or sink
The short answer
Pink or orange slime in a toilet bowl, shower or sink is almost always Serratia marcescens, an airborne bacterium that settles on damp surfaces and feeds on soap and shampoo residue. It is not in your well water, and no water treatment system will stop it. Cleaning and ventilation will.
What actually causes it

Serratia marcescens
A common bacterium that lives in dust and air almost everywhere. It colonises persistently damp surfaces and produces a pink-to-orange pigment. It thrives on the phosphates and fatty residues in soap, shampoo and toothpaste — which is why bathrooms and pet bowls are where people notice it.

Iron bacteria (the thing people mistake it for)
A genuinely water-borne problem, and the reason this page exists — iron bacteria produce a rust-coloured slime that people reasonably assume is the same thing. It is not, and unlike Serratia it does mean something is wrong with your well.
How to tell
Rust-orange rather than pink, slimy inside the toilet tank as well as the bowl, an oily rainbow sheen on standing water, and filters clogging far faster than expected.
Why this isn't a well water problem
This is worth stating plainly because it is the single most common misdiagnosis in this area, and it costs people real money. Serratia marcescens is airborne. It is present in most homes, on most municipal supplies as well as wells, and it arrives through the air rather than through the tap.
Chlorinated municipal water suppresses it slightly, which is why people who move from city water to a well often notice it for the first time and conclude the well is at fault. The well changed; so did the chlorine residual that was keeping surfaces marginally hostile. The bacterium was always in the air.
The practical consequence: installing a softener, a UV system or a whole-house filter will not stop pink slime. UV in particular gets sold for this and cannot work, because it disinfects water passing through the lamp and has no effect on a surface colonised from the air.
Pink slime or iron bacteria?
The distinction matters because one is a cleaning routine and the other is a well problem that will clog your plumbing and your filters.
Colour is the first clue — Serratia is pink to salmon, iron bacteria is rust-orange to brown. Location is the better one. Serratia grows where air, water and soap residue meet: the toilet bowl waterline, shower corners, the sink drain. Iron bacteria grows inside the water system, so it appears in the closed toilet tank, inside filter housings and in the pressure tank, where air and soap never reach.
If you lift the lid on the toilet cistern and find slime in there, the problem is in your water, not your bathroom air. That is the check that settles it.
Getting rid of it and keeping it away
Serratia is easy to remove and stubborn to prevent, because you cannot stop it arriving — only make surfaces less hospitable.
Clean with a chlorine-based product, which kills it outright where a general surfactant cleaner mostly just moves it around. For a toilet, that means scrubbing the bowl and leaving the cleaner in contact for ten minutes or so rather than flushing straight away. For showers, the grout and the corners matter more than the flat surfaces.
Prevention is about dryness and residue. Ventilate the bathroom properly during and after showers, squeegee or wipe the shower down, and rinse soap residue rather than letting it dry in place. In a rarely used bathroom, flushing the toilet weekly stops a stagnant bowl becoming a reservoir.

- Run the extractor fan during showers and for twenty minutes afterwards.
