Orange, rusty or brown well water
The short answer
Orange or rusty well water is almost always iron. If the water is clear at the tap and turns orange in the bucket, the iron is dissolved and a softener or iron filter will handle it. If it comes out already orange, it has oxidised in the well or the pipes and needs filtration. Orange slime means iron bacteria, which is a different problem.
What actually causes it
Several different problems produce this same symptom, and they need completely different fixes. Work down the list — each one names the check that rules it in or out.

Dissolved (ferrous) iron
Iron held in solution by water that has no oxygen in it. It is invisible underground and stays invisible until air reaches it. This is the most common form in drilled wells and the easiest to treat.
How to tell
Fill a clear glass. The water is colourless at first, then goes yellow, orange and finally drops rusty sediment over ten to thirty minutes. - 2
Oxidised (ferric) iron
Iron that has already met oxygen and turned to visible rust particles, either in a shallow or poorly sealed well, or in old galvanised plumbing on its way to your tap.
How to tell
The water is orange the instant it comes out, and a paper coffee filter catches visible orange grit. - 3
Iron bacteria
Naturally occurring bacteria that feed on iron and build a rusty biofilm inside the well, the pressure tank and the plumbing. Harmless to drink but genuinely destructive to equipment, and they clog everything they colonise.
How to tell
Rusty slime rather than grit — a slimy orange coating inside the toilet tank, a rainbow-oily sheen on standing water, and a swampy or fuel-like smell. Filters clog far faster than their rating suggests. - 4
Rusting steel in your own system
A galvanised pressure tank, an old steel well casing, or galvanised supply pipe corroding from the inside. The well itself may be fine.
How to tell
Orange water that is worst first thing in the morning or after the house has sat unused, and clears after running a few minutes. A test at the wellhead comes back much cleaner than one at the kitchen tap.
Is orange well water safe to drink?
Iron is not a health contaminant. The EPA classes it as a secondary standard at 0.3 mg/L, which is an aesthetic threshold — the point where it starts staining things — rather than a safety limit. Drinking iron-rich water is not going to hurt you, and iron is a nutrient you actively need.
The caveat is what iron often travels with. Water aggressive enough to dissolve iron out of rock is often also carrying manganese, and water entering a well shallow enough to have oxidised iron may also be admitting surface water. Neither is implied by the colour itself, but both are worth ruling out with a test rather than assuming.
So: orange water is a nuisance problem, not an emergency. It is worth fixing because of what it does to your plumbing, your fixtures, your laundry and your hair — not because it is dangerous.
Why it turns hair orange, and what to do about it
This catches people out because it is not really staining in the way a sink stains. Iron in the water binds to the protein in hair and to any colour treatment sitting on it. The effect is worst on light, porous, bleached or colour-treated hair, which is why one person in a household notices immediately and another never does.
Two things make it worse: heat, because hot water carries and deposits iron more readily, and time, because it accumulates over many washes rather than arriving all at once. People often mistake a gradual shift for their colour fading, when what is actually happening is iron building up.
The stopgaps are worth knowing, but be clear that they are stopgaps. A chelating or clarifying shampoo binds and lifts deposited metal, and used weekly it will hold the colour back. An acidic rinse — diluted vitamin C powder, or a citric acid rinse — dissolves surface deposits. A shower filter helps, though most cartridge filters have very little contact time at shower flow rates, so expect a reduction rather than a cure.
The actual fix is whole-house treatment. If iron is low enough that the only complaint is hair, a softener is usually enough. If it is above about 3 mg/L, you need an iron filter, and the hair problem disappears along with the laundry and fixture staining.
- Wash in the coolest water you can tolerate — heat deposits more iron.
- Use a chelating shampoo weekly rather than daily; they are stripping by design.
- Rinse with filtered or bottled water after colour treatments until the water is fixed.
- Treat a shower filter as a temporary measure while you sort the whole house out.
Removing iron stains without setting them
The single most important thing here: do not use chlorine bleach on an iron stain. Bleach oxidises iron, which is exactly the reaction that makes the stain permanent. It is the instinctive reaction and it makes things worse.
Iron stains come out with an acid or a reducing agent instead. Oxalic acid, sold as a rust remover for fabrics and porcelain, works quickly on fixtures. Ascorbic acid — plain powdered vitamin C — is gentler and works well on toilets and shower doors. Citric acid and cream of tartar are milder still and fine for light staining.
For laundry, use a rust remover made for fabric, and rerun the load with no detergent. Detergent plus iron sets the stain. And there is no point removing stains at all until the water is treated: they simply come back on the next wash.
Which treatment you actually need
The right equipment is decided almost entirely by how much iron you have and what form it is in. Guessing is expensive, so this is a case where a test genuinely pays for itself.
- Under 0.3 mg/L — below the staining threshold. Nothing needed.
- 0.3 to 3 mg/L of dissolved iron — a water softener handles this alongside hardness. Fine-mesh resin lasts longer in iron-bearing water.
- Above 3 mg/L — a dedicated iron filter, installed ahead of the softener. Above this, iron fouls softener resin faster than regeneration can strip it, and most manufacturers void the warranty.
- Any oxidised or particulate iron — a sediment pre-filter first, whatever else you fit.
- Iron bacteria — shock chlorination first, then continuous treatment if it comes back. Filtration alone will not clear a colonised well.
