What actually causes it

Several different problems produce this same symptom, and they need completely different fixes. Work down the list — each one names the check that rules it in or out.

    Surface water reaching the well

    Rainwater carrying decaying leaf litter and soil finding a route into the well — past a cracked cap, down the outside of a casing that stops too low, or through ground that slopes toward the wellhead rather than away.

    How to tell
    The taste appears or worsens after heavy rain and fades in dry spells. Very often accompanied by a positive coliform test, which is the reason to test rather than treat.

    Bacteria in the well or plumbing

    Iron, sulfur and other non-pathogenic bacteria produce musty and earthy compounds as they metabolise. They colonise the well, pressure tank and pipework and sustain themselves once established.

    How to tell
    The smell is constant rather than weather-driven, and often comes with slime in the toilet tank or filters clogging faster than expected. Shock chlorination clears it temporarily.

    Geosmin and MIB from algae

    Two compounds produced by algae and actinobacteria that the human nose detects at extraordinarily low concentrations — parts per trillion. Common where a well draws from a shallow aquifer connected to surface water.

    How to tell
    A distinctly earthy, beetroot-like smell with no other symptom, no staining, and a clean bacteria test. Often seasonal, worst in warm weather.

    A stagnant plumbing branch

    Water sitting for weeks in a rarely used bathroom, an outbuilding line or a dead leg goes stale and grows biofilm. Not a well problem at all.

    How to tell
    Only one tap or one part of the house is affected, and it improves after running that tap hard for several minutes. Other taps are fine.

    The water heater

    Bacteria growing in a tank held at a low temperature, or sediment accumulated in the bottom, can produce a musty smell in hot water specifically.

    How to tell
    Only the hot water smells. Cold water is clean at every tap.

Test before you treat this one

This is the one taste complaint where the right first move is a bacteria test rather than a filter, and it is worth being clear about why.

Mineral problems — iron, hardness, sulfur — are nuisances with their own distinctive signatures. A musty or earthy taste is different: it usually indicates organic material in the water, and organic material in a well usually means something is getting in that should not be. The taste is a symptom of a route, and the route is what matters.

So the sequence is a coliform and nitrate test first. If it comes back positive, you have a well integrity problem to find, and the taste will resolve once that is fixed. If it comes back clean, then you are dealing with a taste problem and can treat it as one.

How to test well water

Narrowing it down

Three observations separate the five causes, and they take a few days rather than a few minutes because the pattern over time is what distinguishes them.

  1. Check whether it is hot water only. If so, it is the water heater — flush the tank and check the thermostat is not set too low.
  2. Check whether it is one tap or all of them. One tap, improving after running it hard, is a stagnant branch rather than a well problem.
  3. Watch it against the weather for a fortnight. Worse after rain points at surface water getting in — the most important cause to find, because it is a contamination route.
  4. Look for slime in the toilet cistern and check how fast your filters clog. Both point at bacteria in the system.
  5. Constant, seasonal in warm weather, with clean tests and no slime, is most likely geosmin from algae.

Why carbon alone often disappoints here

Activated carbon is the obvious answer to a taste and odour problem, and it is the one most people are sold. It genuinely does adsorb geosmin and MIB well.

It disappoints for two reasons. The first is that carbon has finite capacity and saturates silently — no pressure drop, no visual change, it simply stops working. On water with a meaningful organic load it saturates fast, so the smell returns after a few months and people conclude the filter was defective.

The second is that carbon treats the water arriving at it, and does nothing about bacteria colonising the well or the plumbing. If the source is a colonised system, the carbon bed itself becomes another damp surface for biofilm to grow on, and a neglected one can make the water worse rather than better.

Where the cause is bacteria, shock chlorination comes first and carbon is a polish afterwards — not a substitute.

How carbon filters work and saturate

Fixing it for good

The durable fix depends entirely on which cause you landed on, which is why the diagnosis is worth the fortnight it takes.

  • Surface water getting in — a well contractor inspection. Cap, casing height, grading and the sanitary seal are the usual culprits, and this is a repair rather than a treatment.
  • Bacteria in the system — shock chlorination, then UV if it returns. Carbon after, for any residual taste.
  • Geosmin or MIB with clean tests — activated carbon, on a replacement schedule rather than waiting for the smell.
  • A stagnant branch — flush it, and flush it periodically. Consider removing a dead leg if there is one.
  • The water heater — flush the tank and raise the thermostat above 120°F, keeping scald risk in mind.
