What water treatment do I need?
For when you have symptoms but no lab report yet. It ends with a test list, not a shopping list — deliberately.
The short answer
Symptoms narrow the field; only a test settles it. Rotten egg smell points at hydrogen sulfide, orange staining at iron, blue-green staining at acidic water, scale at hardness. Each has a different fix, several look alike, and the concentration — which only a lab gives you — decides the equipment and its size.

Why this stops at a test list
It would be easy to end this tool with a product recommendation. Most sites do. We stop one step earlier, and the reason matters.
Symptoms identify candidates, not concentrations. Orange staining tells you there is iron. It does not tell you whether there is 0.5 ppm or 8 ppm — and those two numbers call for completely different equipment. At the low end a softener may handle it. At the high end you need an iron filter, and installing a softener alone would foul it within a year.
Worse, several symptoms have multiple causes that look identical at the tap. Black specks can be manganese, degraded rubber from a failing pressure tank, or carbon fines from a filter. Cloudy water can be air, sediment, or methane. Buying equipment from the symptom alone means a real chance of solving the wrong problem expensively.
A basic well water panel — coliform bacteria, nitrate, pH, hardness, iron and manganese — typically costs $50 to $150. Set against equipment that runs to thousands, testing first is the cheapest decision in the whole process.
Order matters as much as equipment
Whatever your test comes back with, the stages go in a fixed relative order. This is the part that is most often got wrong, and getting it wrong can stop correctly chosen equipment working at all.
A neutraliser goes before an iron filter because oxidising media barely works below pH 7. Iron removal goes before the softener because iron fouls resin. UV goes last, because particles physically shield organisms from the lamp.

Some of this is a health question, not a comfort one
Most well water complaints are aesthetic — taste, smell, staining, scale. Iron, manganese, pH, sulfate and chloride are all governed by the EPA’s secondary standards, which exist for appearance and taste rather than health.
A few are different. Coliform bacteria, nitrate and arsenic are covered by health-based primary standards, and none of the three can be seen, smelled or tasted at any concentration. That is precisely why symptom-led diagnosis is not enough on its own, and why a coliform and nitrate test belongs in every well owner’s first panel whatever their water looks like.
If a test comes back positive for bacteria or high in nitrate, that is a conversation with your county or state health department rather than an equipment purchase. Most offer testing and guidance directly, often free.

- What should I test my well water for?
- At minimum coliform bacteria, nitrate, pH, hardness, iron and manganese. Add arsenic, radon or uranium if they are known in your area — your state geological survey or health department publishes this. Retest annually, and after any flooding or well work.
- Do I need a whole house filter or just one at the tap?
- It depends what you are removing. Staining, scale and smell affect every fixture and need whole-house treatment. Nitrate and arsenic are drinking-water concerns, so reverse osmosis under one sink is the normal answer — there is no reason to demineralise water you flush a toilet with.
- My water seems fine — do I still need to test it?
- Yes. Coliform bacteria, nitrate and arsenic are all invisible, odourless and tasteless, and all are health-based standards rather than aesthetic ones. Water that looks and tastes perfect can carry any of them, which is the whole reason annual testing is recommended for private wells.
